The pair moved out into the hallway, which fortunately was dimly lit at this time of night, making the signal easier to see; however, at this point, it wasn’t necessary for Adam to see the signal. He knew where it led. It was following the corridor to the stairs and eventually down into the catacombs. That was where Adam would pick up the real scent.

“But hundreds of security personnel have been down here already,” Tidus pointed out when they reached the ancient wooden doorway. “And they didn’t find anything.”

“They didn’t find anything because there were too many options. These tunnels run for miles in all directions. Besides, Constantine could have covered his tracks knowing the Formilians were going to search the catacombs. But we know for sure which way he went. At least now we do.”

“From the ATD he’s wearing?”

“That’s right.”

“Without him using it?”

“He’s using it all the time, Tidus, just as I am. It’s linked with our brains; we can’t unlink it.”

“Does that mean he can track us, too?”

“He could, if he knew how, and knew we were coming. Other than that, there’s too much clutter. And you forget, I’m a whiz with one of these things.”

“In a past life, Adam.”

“A life I still remember. Now, c’mon, Tidus, let’s go. Vinset and I chased them to this point, and then they went left. But the signal goes right. This is where they tricked us.”

As before, the hallway just inside the doorway was cluttered with discarded boxes, foul smelling clothes and rotting food. Formilian rats were feasting on the bounty and didn’t scurry away when the two bounty hunters entered their domain.

The floor of the catacombs was covered with shoeprints, signifying that Andalon’s troops had already covered this ground. Adam ignored the trail on the floor and, instead, followed the one in the air. The pair didn’t have flashlights, but they did have the tiny pen lights on their MKs. That was fine; Adam didn’t want a lot of light contaminating the passageway. Besides, if he needed more light, he could always conjure up a static electricity ball or two.

They made good time, not falling for false leads. Adam found it fortunate that Andalon hadn’t come down here with his troops. The residual aftereffect of his ATD would have confused the matter. As it were, there was only one signal. It wasn’t very strong and it didn’t overlap, which was encouraging. That meant Constantine hadn’t come back this way—not yet. He might when it came time to execute Arieel, since the scene of the event was to be the Temple. There may still be time to rescue her.
